SRI CHATURCHINTAMANI NAGAJI MAHARAJ

SRI CHATURCHINTAMANI NAGAJI MAHARAJ

Sri Chaturchintamani Devacharyaji was the 39th sadguru of this sampradaya, although he was better known as Nagaji Maharaj. Sri Nagaji Maharaj was born in Paigaam, a village in the Braja Bhoomi. He considered Lord Sri Krishna as his friend and worshipped Him in that manner. This devotion towards God as a friend is known as sakhya bhava, and is very common amongst the people living in Braja. After he received sanyaas, he went to a mountain called Kadamkhandi near Barsana, to perform his penances. The place is surrounded by a mountain range on three sides and he chose one of the caves to perform his austerities. He was unable to get the darshan of Sri Krishna even after many years of severe penances. Sri Nagaji Maharaj was very hurt that the Lord had not responded to his prayers and penances. Offended at being ignored by his ishta- devata he thought, “Sri Krishna himself became sidha (a realized soul) in this Braja Bhoomi itself therefore he will not allow anyone else to become a sidha in this place. I will leave His place and go elsewhere. I will perform my penances elsewhere. Let me see how He stops me from reaching my goal.” Thinking thus he picked up his chimta (a pair of iron tongs which used by sadhus even now), and kamandalu (a vessel to keep water, it has a handle and can be carried around with ease), and departed from that place. However, he could not go very far because his matted locks became entangled in thorny plants on both sides of the path. His matted locks got stuck in those thorns in such a manner that he could neither move forwards nor go back. In a huff he thought,” This is the work of none other than Thakurji. He has entangled my locks to stop me from going elsewhere. All right, I will not go anywhere, I will remain standing like this come what may. Let me see what He will do now.” He stood there with his matted locks entangled in the thorns of trees and remained standing for three days. On the fourth day Sri Thakurji appeared before him and embraced him. The Lord freed Sri Nagaji Maharaj’s locks from the thorns and said, “Nagaji, you have now become a sidha. Ask of me any boon that you wish for.” Sri Nagaji Maharaj was overjoyed and prostrated himself before the Lord. Sri Nagaji Maharaj said, “If you truly wish to grant me a boon then grant me, ‘Aadha dhoodh aur Aadha poot’( Grant me half the milk that is produced in Brajadham and half the male children born here so that may become ascetics).” What he essentially asked for was that half the male children born in Braja should become ascetics and the other half should become householders. Similarly, half the milk produced in Braja should be given to sadhus to allow them to perform their penances without worrying about food. Sri Krishna granted Nagaji’s boons and assumed the form of Nagaji’s disciple to tell the people of Brajadham that these boons have been granted to Nagaji. After publicizing Sri Nagaji’s boons among the local populace Sri Krishna disappeared. The effect of these boons can still be noticed in the Brajabhoomi. Sri Nagaji Maharaj was a very powerful saint and it was said that he performed the 84 kos parikrama of Brajadham everyday on foot. The king of Bharatpur heard about Nagaji’s feat of covering the parikrama and decided to test the truth. He placed his men all along the route of the parikrama to see whether Sri Nagaji did in fact cover the whole route on foot in a single day. When Sri Nagaji went for his parikrama, he greeted everyone of the king’s men everyday and the king was satisfied that Sri Nagaji did actually cover the whole distance everyday on foot.
